Mathematics
7th Grade - One Year
ONE YEAR
Math 7: This course is designed to prepare students for Math 8. In this course, students will continue to solidify their mathematical foundation by studying all operations with fractions, decimals and integers. It will also include a study of ratios, proportions, percents, statistics and probability. Students will also work on Geometry concepts such as area and perimeter of composite figures. Algebraic concepts covered in this course will include solving multi-step equations and one-step equations.
Math 7 Accelerated: This course is designed to prepare students for Algebra in 8th grade. All of the above-mentioned Math 7 concepts will be covered but in a more rigorous manner. In addition to all of the Math 7 concepts, students in the Honors program will be studying half of the Math 8 curriculum. Some of these Math 8 concepts are exponents, square roots, linear function, transformations, slope, and complex equations.
8th Grade - One Year
ONE YEAR
Math 8: This course focuses on three critical areas: (1) formulating and reasoning about expressions and equations, including modeling a relationship with equations, tables, and graphs and solving linear equations and systems of linear equations. (2) using functions to describe quantitative relationships; (3) analyzing two- and three - dimensional figures using distance, angle, similarity, and congruence and understanding and applying the Pythagorean Theorem.
Algebra 1: This course includes instruction in the notion of function, solving equations (linear, quadratic, and simple exponential), rates of change and growth patterns, and graphs as representations of functions. Included is modeling with real world applications of all concepts. This class is the same course as Algebra I at the high school level and successful completion will earn high school graduation credit.
*Disclaimer: “Students who have taken a high school course in seventh or eighth grade may request to have the course removed (expunged) from their high school records. Courses eligible for expungement include Algebra 1, Geometry, Spanish 1, and Spanish 2. If a middle school student receives a grade of “F” in a high school course, the grade and course will automatically be expunged from the high school transcript. If a middle school student receives a grade of “D” in a high school course, the parent/guardian can request to have the course expunged from the high school transcript by contacting the student’s school counselor.”
