Welcome to Serrano Intermediate School—home of the Seahawks. Serrano is made up of an amazing group of people who enjoy students and have dedicated much of their lives to help them learn. As part of Saddleback Valley Unified School District, we have fully implemented SV Innovates. At Serrano we focus on intentional lesson design, engaging strategies and innovative practices in order to create successful students. All of our classrooms are 1:1 learning environments which means that each student has access to a personal computing device in each classroom. We will start off 2019-20 with one-quarter of our classrooms newly remodeled with new 75” video monitors, an amplification system along with flexible furniture which will allow innovative learning spaces.
Serrano has fantastic programs to meet the needs of every learner. We have award winning electives, a challenging honors program, a PE program focusing on the whole child, a qualified, dedicated and experienced special education staff, and exemplary core subject instruction. In addition to this, we have a wide variety of extra-curricular activities and clubs available for our students. We have lunchtime intramurals and a vibrant and active ASB program which offers lunchtime activities, spirit challenges and competitions and dances.
This year, Serrano is opening our brand-new STEAM Village and will be part of a STEAM pathway connecting students from Santiago STEAM Magnet school to El Toro High School. This program will include elective courses in Computer Science, Engineering and Digital Media Arts. Concepts from these courses will also be integrated into all core curricular classes--offering a truly interdisciplinary, 21st century educational opportunity. Students who have selected this elective program will learn and practice human-centered design and project based learning through trimester based projects across all subjects.
Lastly, and what fundamentally makes Serrano special is that we are seeking to make our world a better place—one student at a time! We aim to develop character in each of our students—every day. We emphasize ‘treating others the way you want to be treated’, and we model and reinforce this daily! Our aim is to impact our classrooms, school and community with incredible young people doing extraordinary things. Our Unified PE program is just one example of this. Students with and without disabilities come together to build relationships, cultivate leadership skills and develop an inclusive class and school-wide environment.
I am very proud to be the Principal here at Serrano, and I look forward to a fantastic 2019-20 school year!
