Principal's Message

Welcome to Serrano Intermediate School—home of the Seahawks.

The last year and a half has been an incredibly challenging time for our community, state, country and world, and the effects of the pandemic have been felt near and wide.  At Serrano, we endeavor to bring back a sense of normalcy for our students this year.  I am eagerly anticipating the return of all students to campus and resuming instruction 5 days per week with our normal bell schedule.  The shutdown of schools, followed by virtual learning and hybrid learning have had wide ranging impacts on our students’ academic progress as well as their social and emotional health.  Here at Serrano in 2021-22, we are committed to identifying the academic, social and emotional needs of our students and addressing them.  We are dedicated to partnering with our families, our district and community to provide resources to ensure our students are provided opportunities to be successful in all each of these areas.

Serrano is made up of an amazing group of people who enjoy students and have dedicated much of their lives to help them learn.  As part of Saddleback Valley Unified School District, we have fully implemented SV Innovates.  At Serrano, we focus on intentional lesson design, engaging strategies and innovative practices in order to create successful students.  We also have a wonderful PTSA who are dedicated to supporting  Serrano’s students and staff in countless areas, and I encourage you to join and get involved.

In 2021-22, our STEAM Village has reached maximum capacity with over 300 7th and 8th graders in the program.  We are part of SVUSD’s K-12 STEAM pathway which connects students from Santiago STEAM Magnet school to El Toro High School (which is receiving their first group of our students this year).  At Serrano, our students experience challenging elective courses in Computer Science, Engineering and Digital Media Arts.  Concepts from these courses are integrated into all core subject classes--offering a truly interdisciplinary, 21st century educational opportunity.  Our STEAM Village students learn and practice human-centered design and project-based learning through projects each trimester which encompass all of their subjects.

Lastly, and what fundamentally makes Serrano special is that we are seeking to make our world a better place—one student at a time!  We aim to develop character in each of our students—every day.  Our student of the month program recognizes students who exemplify positive character traits such as:  Caring, Responsibility, Perseverance and Resilience.  Our theme this year is
, Be Golden and we will emphasize ‘treating others the way you want to be treated’.  We will model and reinforce this daily, and students will have the opportunity to receive ‘Gold Tickets’ when observed demonstrating this!  Our aim is to impact our classrooms, school and community with incredible young people doing extraordinary things.

I am very proud to be the Principal here at Serrano, and I look forward to a fantastic 2021-22 school year!
