Helpful Hints and Frequently Asked Questions

The Start of the 2019/2020 School Year

  • Student schedules will be available on the Parent Portal at 5:00 pm on Friday, August 23rd.
  • Homeroom lists will be posted by student ID number at the front of the school on August 23rdat 5:00 pm. The campus gates will be opened the weekend prior to school starting so you may tour the school from the outside.
  • Homeroom is the same room and teacher as period 1.  Students will report to Homeroom/Period 1 on August 26th, the first day of school.  This is where students will receive their locator card (schedule).  It is a PLC minimum day: 8:15 AM-1:07 PM.
  • On the first day, students should bring their ID cards, backpacks, basic supplies (binder, pens/pencils, paper, and planner) and be ready to get to work.
  • School supply lists are handed out the first week of school. The supplies depend on the teacher/class.
  • There are no school lockers, only lockers for PE class.
  • Utilize the school planner. The planner has a map, rotation schedule, and listing of all PLC days.

Parking Lot, Drop-off, and Pickup

  • Drop-off:Parents may drop off in front of the school. Obviously, the closer to 8:10 AM, the more congested the parking lot.  Alternatively, many parents opt to drop off at the RSM Central Park and students enter the campus through the back entrance.
  • Pick up:The parking lot is generally closed 30 minutes before the end of the school day to 15 minutes after school.  Once the lot is closed, do not access the lot through the exit at the south end of campus.  You should make arrangements to pick up your child in a specific area. Many parents opt to pick up at the RSM Library or outside of Central Park.
  • Carpool:If you need assistance with carpool, then please go to the PTSO website for the carpool link. This is an ongoing document where people share their information to connect regarding carpools to RSM Intermediate.

Helpful Hints

  • Attendance:If your student is sick, late to school, or needs to be released early, call the Attendance Office at (949) 459-8257 to report the absence or late arrival. If your student is absent 3 or more days, then parents can contact the Attendance Office to request assignments.  Prior to that, contact the teacher directly or check their website. For early release, send a note with student in the morning, indicating the time and your student can be ready and waiting for parent pick-up.
  • Delivery of Items:If you need to have a message or item (lunch/homework) delivered to a student, call the Main Office to have a message delivered to your student. Students are expected to remember their books, lunches, assignments, and projects on a daily basis. When parents deliver items to school we make an effort to contact students, but it is the student’s responsibility to check at the attendance window. In an effort to minimize distractions to the learning environment, items will not be delivered to students in class unless it is an emergency.
  • Dress Code:RSM does have a dress code and more information will be given during the expectation assemblies the first few weeks of school.
  • Cell Phones:Cell phones and other electronic devices must be powered off completely and stored away during school hours.  There is no electronic device usage during the school day without permission from a staff member.Bell to Bell…No Cell!
  • Nutrition:Snacks and lunch can be purchased from the cafeteria and students must eat in the designated lunch area. Please click on the Lunch Menus section of the district website under the Resource tab for lunch menus and account information.

Academic Requirements and Expectations

  • Schedules and Villages:We work hard to provide opportunities for students to interact with as many other intermediate school students as possible. Mixing and matching classes and students builds and strengthens our school community.
    • Students in both 7thand 8thgrade will take English, history, math, science, PE, and electives courses. In 8thgrade, students take one trimester of health class. On average students should expect 20-30 minutes of homework per night, per subject.  To promote to the next grade level students must have a minimum 1.5 GPA, a minimum of a 1.0 GPA in both English and math, and no more than 3 total trimester F’s in core classes.
    • The students rotate schedules, but if they are in the same village, they will generally have the same teacher for their core courses. Honors courses are part of each village. In 7thgrade, students are generally assigned to a village where they share the same teachers for their core courses of English, math, history and science. This helps students if they miss school, they can contact someone in their village to get the homework for all their core courses.
  • Physical Education:All students must take PE. Each student is assigned a PE locker. PE uniforms can be stored in the locker. There are no showers during PE time. We recommend keeping deodorant, socks and gym shoes in the locker. Please remind your child to take their PE clothes home regularly for washing.

Other Items

  • School Security: Safety is one of our primary concerns at RSM and in order to promote safety for students and the school environment, RSM is a closed campus. All visitors must sign in at the reception desk, located in the main office, and acquire a visitor’s pass.
    • RSM, in partnership with the Orange County Sheriff's Department, also has a text-a-tip hotline for students, staff, and parents who may have information regarding vandalism, bullying, or other suspicious activity. The number is 949 424-3RSM (949 424-3776).  If a student wishes to report during the school day, then he/she is encouraged to come to the office. We encourage community use of this program to keep RSM the safe, great place that it is.
  • Computers:Your student does not need to bring a computer. At RSM, we have Chromebooks for student use in classes.  Additionally, there are computers in the library for use during snack and lunch.
  • Student Connections:There are many opportunities for students to be connected at school.  Our ASB program will host fun-a-ramas during lunch on certain days, we have spirit days, and there are athletic opportunities such as basketball and football.  Also, we can’t forget our schoolwide Crossfire tournament that occurs in the Spring.  Generally, we host one dance each trimester. Students can pre-purchase dance tickets during lunch prior to the dance.
  • Parent Involvement:Make sure that you are receiving the weekly Roadrunner Express. This email is from the school and it touches on all important events and items at the school. KRSM is the student broadcast and you can watch the videos on YouTube.
    • Sign up for the PTSO! The PTSO offers Parent Education Nights and other programs to support RSM. We are always looking for volunteers and your support helps our wonderful school community. We send out monthly newsletters and have an active Facebook Page.  Also, parents are invited by the PTSO to help donate items and chaperone the dances.
  • Checking Grades:Parents can access their child's grades online via the Aeries Information Family Portal. You can set up a progress report to be sent to your email weekly for each student. Parents will also print off the trimester report card from the Family Portal.  It is advisable to check grades once or twice a week.
  • Parent/Teacher/Student Concerns: We believe that it is important for the student to work directly with the teacher. If, after working with the teacher, the issues are still not resolved, please contact your child’s counselor. Helpful strategies will be offered to resolve the issues and to help teach the student valuable interpersonal skills and how to deal with conflict.

RSM Text Messaging Service

As RSM looks to bolster our avenues of communication with families, we are happy to introduce a text messaging service through School Messenger.  School Messenger already provides our district with the emailing services for communicating with families. Now, we are piloting the text feature.  We will be using this text feature to communicate with families about upcoming events, important news, and pertinent information should an emergency arise.  In order to participate text “Y” or “Yes” to the number 67587.  This is a free service, with the exception of any applicable messaging and data rates.

UPCOMING SURVEYS

The following surveys will be administered at RSM Intermediate School during the month of November.

Panorama Survey - SVUSD has developed a district-wide focus on social-emotional learning (SEL). Research shows that strong social and emotional skills improve student’s mental health and wellness, social skills and academic achievement. This survey will help us better understand how much our students believe they can succeed in achieving academic outcomes, how well they manage their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in different situations, and how well they consider the perspectives of others and empathize with them. This survey will be administered in World History (7th grade) or U.S. History (8th grade) classes during the week of November 12th.

California Healthy Kids Survey - This survey gathers information on developmental supports provided to youth, school connectedness and barriers to learning, school safety and health-related concerns such as physical activity and nutritional habits, alcohol, tobacco and other drug use and risk of depression and suicide and perceived sexual orientation. This is a very important survey that will help promote better health and well-being among our youth, improve the school learning environment and combat problems such as drug abuse and violence. This survey will be administered in 7th grade science classes during the week of November 4th.

California Student Tobacco Survey - The California Student Tobacco Survey (CSTS) is used to determine the statewide prevalence rates for adolescent use of tobacco (including vapes) and marijuana. In addition to questions about use, the survey examines student attitudes and exposure to these products, as well as perceptions of harm associated with their use. This survey will be administered in 8th grade P.E./health classes during the week of November 4th.

Information regarding the Panorama Survey was sent to all families on October 4, 2019. Information regarding the California Healthy Kids Survey will be sent this evening and California Student Tobacco Survey will be sent next week.
