Students in the yearlong elective are introduced to the concept of engineering design through teamwork. They learn engineering design, CAD, 3D printing, Robotics, and coding.

The Performing Arts class is a yearlong elective for 7th and 8th graders who wish to participate in a theatre production. Students learn the fundamentals of theater and perform a Children’s theater play in front of a live audience. These students have the option of performing in the theater talent show in May. There are minimal after school rehearsals for this class.

Theatre Production 7 is a yearlong elective class for 7th grade students. Students learn the fundamentals of theatre, perform in a melodrama and learn the basics of singing and choreography in a 4-week musical unit. These students have the option of performing in the theater talent show in May. There are minimal after school rehearsals for this class.

Theatre Production 8 is a yearlong elective class for 8th grade students. Students will dive deeper into theatre fundamentals. They will perform in Haunted Hallways, A Christmas Carol, a musical and the theatre talent show.  The musical will require 8-9 weeks of after school rehearsal time, usually in January, February and March.

In this yearlong elective, students will work in various mediums including drawing, watercolor, painting, ceramics, oil pastels, and digital art. Students will learn techniques and concepts from artists from around the world and apply this learning to their own artwork. Throughout the year students will be adding their work to their own digital portfolio. In addition, this class prepares students for the high school course, Fundamentals of Art.

Advanced Video Production is a year-long elective course for 8th grade students.  While learning about the history, art and technology involved in video/film production, and film production terminology, students will plan, produce, and edit a variety of short productions. This includes a bi-weekly broadcasting show called LPTV.  Students learn to be anchors, reporters, videographers, directors, video editors, set crew, and teleprompter technicians. These students are also called upon to make school wide videos to help educate our student body about a variety of school procedures and programs. Students will become acquainted with more advanced video equipment in this class.

Intro to Video Production is a semester-long elective course for both 7th and 8th grade students.  While learning about the history, art, and technology involved in video/film production, students plan, produce, and edit a variety of short productions.  Projects include (but are not limited to) talk show interviews, movie/book trailers, commercials, stop motion, and music videos.  Students will become acquainted with film production terminology and study media literacy.

ASB stands for Associated Student Body and it represents the interests and goals of the entire School Student Body. Our ASB class focuses on the development of leadership skills. Students who enroll in ASB do so because they recognize that there is more to being successful in school than simply doing homework. Having a positive atmosphere during the school day where students feel wanted and accepted is critical to their success. To that end, the officers and appointed members of the ASB class focus on providing engaging activities that ensure a well-rounded school experience. Students in ASB plan, organize, and participate in such activities as dances, Spirit Week, and cultural events throughout the year.

Students are elected or appointed to the class each spring for the following school year. If you are interested in being a leader at La Paz Intermediate, consider running for an office or applying to be appointed to the class.

This program is designed to prepare students for four-year college eligibility and develop career readiness skills. AVID stands for Advanced Via Individual Determination. This is a year-long elective class that supports the all-around student performance inside and outside of school by focusing on five major components. These components consist of writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading. AVID has a proven track record in bringing out the best in students and helping them achieve their greatest potential.

We also focus on having a family atmosphere where we can help our peers and our community by incorporating team building activities and participating in community service projects on and off campus. The benefits of being an AVID student are providing academic instruction and other support to students as well as learning to make and set individual goals. AVID motivates students to seek a college education/career path by attending field trips to four-year colleges to feel what it is like to be a college student, participate in team and individual research projects, increase career awareness and learn about each students personal strengths and careers associated with these skills such as public speaking and service hours.

This course is designed to develop students’ skills in yearbook production by providing experiences in selected aspects of yearbook production.  Students learn basic principles of yearbook production and develop skills that include writing copy, captions and headlines; digital photography; desktop publishing and using appropriate technology tools for media production. The school yearbook will be completed by March. During the remainder of the school year, the students will use their yearbook production skills to create a personal yearbook. Yearbook Production supports student’s development as writers, photographers, editors, independent users of technology and as responsible contributing members of the La Paz Intermediate School community.

• Spanish level 1 is offered as a year-long elective to 8th graders.
• It is the equivalent of Spanish level 1 in high school.
• Students who take this class in 8th grade will still take two years of language in high school.
• By completing Spanish 1 in 8th grade they free up space to get to level 4 and 5 in high school.
• 3 to 4 years of the same world language exceeds UC requirements.
