It was in the spirit of a safe, vibrant, family oriented community that Melinda Heights Elementary School was born. The school's doors officially opened to 740 students in April, 1998. In the span of nineteen years, the school's population has grown to over 1000 students instructed by more than 30 highly-qualified classroom teachers who are dedicated to the school's mission statement. With assessment scores consistently higher than State and District averages, the Melinda Heights family is dedicated to superior teaching and active, engaged learning. Melinda Heights is the proud home of more than 10 different languages, three SAI Educational Specialists, GATE Cluster classes in grades 3-6, lively music programs at all grade levels, a STEM lab, arts instruction, and a families that are dedicated to making Melinda Heights the finest elementary school in SVUSD.

Melinda Heights Elementary School provides a strong academic focus for our students along with an environment that supports the building of positive behavior, social relationships, and individual responsibility. Students’ individual needs are the focus for teachers. A school wide instructional focus on 21st Century skills is supported by all staff members and is evident in all classrooms at Melinda Heights Elementary School. We believe in a balanced educational program, where students thrive in core curricular areas and maintain a love for visual and performing arts, STEM and the meaningful integration of technology in each classroom. The California Common Core Standards serve as the guide for all instruction, and our teachers focus on these standards while utilizing a variety of instructional strategies.

Technology continues to be an area of emphasis and an integral piece of our instructional program, resulting in increased engagement and academic achievement. The focus of the Melinda Heights technology plan is to see technology as a tool for learning and critical thinking, rather than an end in itself. Students have access to the use of technology for communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity daily.

Melinda Heights is proud of its positive learning environment and focus on the social emotional health of its students. The motto for Melinda Heights Elementary School is Melinda Heights Mountain Lions ROAR. Our students show Responsibility, Own their Choices, Act with Integrity and are Responsible. Positive student efforts toward ROAR are reinforced through our School wide PBIS – Positive Behavior Intervention and Support program. Trimester assemblies recognize students not only for their academic strengths, but also for their exemplary behavior. Meldina Heights students are well behaved, with few requiring serious disciplinary action.

Melinda Heights Elementary School’s staff works to form close relationships with the parents of all students. Faculty members coordinate family nights for parents and their children. This brings important information to the parents directly from teachers. Melinda Heights Elementary School Site Council (SSC) is composed of staff and parents. They review the instructional program and approve additional state funding for professional development, supplemental educational materials, and instructional assistants. The SSC meets at least quarterly and invites all interested parents to attend its meetings. Parent/Community surveys are provided by both SVUSD and Melinda in order to provide valuable input into SVUSD’s LCAP plan and appropriate utilization of LCFF funding. Melinda Heights Elementary School is indeed fortunate to have a tremendously involved parent and community support base.

The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) is an integral part of our overall school program. Parent volunteers are a welcome addition to our campus. Parents are on campus daily providing classroom help, working directly with students, engaging in clerical and project support, chaperoning field study trips, and participating in variety of other activities. Melinda Heights’ PTA works diligently to raise funds to contribute directly to educational activities and students’ curriculum. The PTA raises funds to provide support materials and supplementary enrichment programs. These include enrichment assemblies such as the Meet the Masters, classroom support, software programs, music instruction and field trips. Our amazing PTA funds our Lil’ Scientist STEM Lab, where K-6 grade students gain hands on experience in science, robotics, engineering and more. In addition, through the PTA, our parents coordinate annual book fairs, blood drives and Health Week activities, Family Fun Events, the Jog a Thon and the Amazing Melinda Heights Carnival. They assist in the library, with vision and hearing screening and school pictures; they publish an informative website, a weekly email, and yearbook, etc. Our parents and students also assist throughout the year in numerous community service projects.
