Independent Study Physical Education
Applications for the 2026–2027 school year are now open.
Application Deadline: Applications and all required hard-copy documents must be submitted no later than Thursday, July 30, 2026.
Independent Study Physical Education (ISPE) is available to students in grades 9–12 who train and compete at a verified elite or highly competitive level as defined by the SVUSD Sport Qualification Criteria.
ISPE is not a waiver from Physical Education. Approved students are enrolled in an SVUSD independent study PE course and must complete required coursework to earn credit.
ISPE is not intended for recreational, developmental, or lower-level athletic participation. Families must review the ISPE Overview and Sport Qualification Criteria before applying. Approval is required before a student can be enrolled in ISPE.
Step 1: Review Eligibility and Requirements
Before applying, families should review the following documents to determine whether the student may qualify:

Step 2: Complete the Online Application
Parent/student completes the online ISPE Application during the open application window.
After the application is submitted, the parent/student will receive a confirmation email with next steps.
Step 3: Submit Required Hard-Copy Documents
The application is not complete until all required documents are submitted in hard copy to the Assistant Principal of Curriculum and Guidance at the student’s school.
Required documents include:
- Practice/training schedule
- Competition schedule
- Coach Contact Form
- Verification of ranking, competitive level, placement, selection, or sport-specific qualification criteria
- Completed ISPE Signature Form
Applications that are late, incomplete, or unverifiable will not be approved.
Step 4: Application Review and Notification
The SVUSD ISPE Application Committee will review the application and supporting documents to determine whether the student qualifies for ISPE.
Final determination is based on the submitted application, supporting documentation, sport-specific criteria, course availability, and alignment with Physical Education requirements.
After review, the parent/student will receive an email notification indicating whether the application was approved, not approved, or is missing required items.
