Children and Youth Behavioral Health Initiative

SVUSD is excited to participate in the Children and Youth Behavioral Health Initiative (CYBHI), a new statewide program that helps schools expand access to student mental health and wellness services. Through CYBHI, school districts may use health insurance funding, including Medi-Cal, to help support eligible school-based mental health services such as counseling and social-emotional supports, without any impact on families. This funding helps schools maintain and strengthen critical student support services while preserving school resources.

Supporting Students Today and Into the Future

School districts are often among the first places students and families seek mental health support, whether through services provided on campus or referrals to trusted community resources. Year after year, SVUSD’s annual Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) survey shows that families, students, and staff consistently identify mental health and wellness as a top priority.

In recent years, many of these supports have been funded through temporary, one-time resources made available during and after the pandemic. As those funding sources expire, this program will help sustain crucial mental health services for students and families while addressing rising costs. It also creates opportunities to expand and strengthen support services over time to better meet the growing needs of our school community.

Program Information for Parents and Guardians

  • Providing health insurance information and consent to bill insurance through CYBHI is completely optional.
  • If you choose to participate and your child receives eligible school-based services, the district may bill your insurance for those services.
  • There is no cost to families. You will not be responsible for co-pays or deductibles, and your child’s available mental health visits through your insurance provider will not be reduced.
  • Your child can continue to access school-based mental health supports regardless of whether you choose to provide insurance information and consent to billing. Participation does not change your child’s access to services. Instead, it allows schools to receive reimbursement for eligible services, helping sustain current levels of support and creating opportunities to expand services over time.
  • Families will have the opportunity to share their health insurance information and consent to bill insurance during SVUSD’s annual Data Confirmation, however, parents/guardians can change their consent at any time using the Aeries Parent Portal.
  • Any information shared will remain confidential and protected in accordance with all applicable state and federal privacy laws.
