How do I transfer files from my old PC to my new Thin Client?
The following steps describe how to transfer your files. Before you begin, you should make sure that your computer is connected to an ethernet jack and can access the network.
Steps for transferring your files:
- Click on the Start button, look under Programs, click on the choice for Windows Explorer
- If you can't find Windows Explorer from this location, try right-clicking on the My Computer icon and choose Explore
- From the Windows Explorer window, click on the Tools menu and choose Map Network Drive
- If you are using Windows 95, you may have to look in the other menus to find the Map Network Drive command
- Click on the Drive drop-down arrow and choose H:
- Click in the Folder field and type "\\dofs01.svusd.net\<user name>", where <user name> is your user name that you use in the VAX (usually) and you don't need to type in the quotes
- Click Finish
At this point, a new window should open. This is showing you the contents of your H: drive. The only folder in this H: drive that you should be interested in is the My Documents folder. All other folders should be ignored.
- Double-click on the My Documents folder. This is the folder that you want to copy your files to so they will appear on your Thin Client.
- With the My Documents window open, go back to your Desktop and double-click on My Computer
- Here you will need to locate the files that you want to move. When you find the files or folders you'd like to move, just drag-and-drop them into the My Documents window. This should COPY them to the new location.
- MAKE SURE YOU ONLY DRAG DATA FILES!! THESE ARE FILES LIKE WORD PROCESSING DOCUMENTS OR SPREADSHEETS. DO NOT MOVE ANY SYSTEM FILES FROM YOUR PC INTO THIS FOLDER!!
Once you are done dragging your files to the My Documents window you can close any open windows.
* Please be aware that space in your My Documents folder is limited. You should only move those files that you intend to use in the future.
Back to your Thin Client
When you want to open these files on your Thin Client, you need to log into Citrix and open Word or Excel (depending on the document you are trying to open). From within the program, click on the File menu and choose Open. This should open you directly to the My Documents folder. If you don't see your recently transferred files, you may have to click at the bottom of the window in the Files of Type drop-down and choose 'All Files'. Now just double-click on the file you would like to open.
