How do I transfer files from my old Mac to my new Thin Client?

The steps to do this on a Macintosh computer are not very complicated. However, there are some things you need to know:

  • Contact Information Services before proceeding with these steps. They have to do some back-end work to give you access to what you need.
  • Make sure your Mac is connected to an ethernet jack
  • Once your files are transferred, you still may not be able to use all of them on your Thin Client. Some Appleworks/Clarisworks documents can not be opened into Microsoft Word without help.

Steps for transferring your files:

  1. Click on the Apple Menu and select Chooser
  2. In the upper left section of the window, click on AppleShare
  3. In the lower left section of the window, select District Office
  4. In the right hand section of the screen, select DOFS01
  5. Click OK
  6. In the DOFS01 window, scroll down until you find your user name and place a check mark next to your name
  7. Click OK
  8. Type in your User Name and Password (user name is the same as the 1st part of your email, password is the last 4 digits of your social security number - usually)
  9. Click Connect

At this point, you should see a new icon somewhere on your Desktop that looks like a drive and has your user name below it. You can now close the Chooser window if it is still open.

  1. Double-click on the icon described above (on your Desktop)
  2. Inside of this window, you will find a folder called My Documents; double-click on it. This is the folder that you want to drag your files to so they will appear on your Thin Client.
  3. With the My Documents window open, double-click on your hard drive icon from your Desktop
  4. Select the files that you want to move to your Thin Client and drag them into the My Documents window
  • MAKE SURE YOU ONLY DRAG DATA FILES!! THESE ARE FILES LIKE WORD PROCESSING DOCUMENTS OR SPREADSHEETS. DO NOT MOVE ANY SYSTEM FILES FROM YOUR MAC INTO THIS FOLDER!!

Once you are done dragging your files to the My Documents window you can close any open windows.

* Please be aware that space in your My Documents folder is limited. You should only move those files that you intend to use in the future.

Back to your Thin Client

When you want to open these files on your Thin Client, you need to log into Citrix and open Word or Excel (depending on the document you are trying to open). From within the program, click on the File menu and choose Open. This should open you directly to the My Documents folder. If you don't see your recently transferred files, you may have to click at the bottom of the window in the Files of Type drop-down and choose 'All Files'. Now just double-click on the file you would like to open.
