How To Use ElementK
Taken from an email that I sent in April, 2001
It might help to print these directions...

My name is Jason Galeener and I am the (relatively) new Technology Trainer for our District. This email is to tell you about the new online training package that we have secured for use by all SVUSD employees. The URL is www.elementk.com. This site contains online courses for classes like Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, Access, and a few other Microsoft products. The site also contains training on Windows 95, 98, 2000, NT, ME, and even classes on Macintosh OS9. We have 25 concurrent licenses to use on this site. We have another 2 licenses that are separate from the rest, due to the classes that are offered. These 2 licenses offer classes like GoLive, Photoshop, Illustrator, PageMaker, Macromedia courses, and more! These courses are available DAY or NIGHT, from WORK or from HOME. They are all self-paced and interactive. I would use these as training courses for novices, or as a just-in-time resource for experienced users. Please pass this information along to your staff. The rest of this email contains directions for accessing the new web site:

1) Open your web browser - Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator are the most common

2) In the Address field, type www.elementk.com. This will take you to the Login page.

3) In the User Name field, select from this range of ID's: svusd001 - svusd025 (no spaces, no caps)

Note: If for some reason you are blocked out with that User Name, try another number and see if it works

4) In the Password field, type in the exact same thing as you typed in the User Name field (the User Name and Password fields are the same).

5) Click on the LOG-IN button. This will take you to the My Courses page which is relatively useless for us.

6) Now click on the Course Catalog link towards the top of the page

7) From here, the classes are broken down into categories. Most of our classes are in the DESKTOP category, so this would be a good place to start, all you need to do is click on the link. Feel free to check out the other categories, or you can use the Search Courses field to type in a specific course title.

8) Once you choose a category, you will see a list of courses that we've subscribed to. Click on a course that interests you.

9) Here's the nice part -- Each course is broken down into smaller mini-classes for you to choose from. Once you click on one of these 'mini-classes', the site will take you to an introductory page.

10) Click on the button 'Click here to begin'

11) If you need help once you have started the class, click on the Options button and choose Help from the resulting window

Notes about the site:

- Your computer needs the Shockwave plug-in to play these online courses. If you don't have it, the site will notify you that you need it and will give you directions on how to download it. Print these directions and follow them.

- If you're unable to login to the site, usually it's due to typing in the wrong User Name and Password. Make sure you are using an ID that is in this range: svusd001 - svusd025. Again, there are NO SPACES, and NO CAPS.

- If you experience problems with the site, contact your Tech Coordinator (they will pass it on if unable to figure it out)

What about those 2 other licenses?

To access the Design and Media classes (GoLive, Photoshop, etc) you have to use different User Names and Passwords when you get to steps #3 and #4 above. These are: media001 or media002. Again, the Password should match the User Name as they are the exact same.

Hope this helps.
