Welcome, Parents, to Project Write On!
Located in south Orange County, Saddleback Valley Unified School District (SVUSD) is the county's fourth largest school district, serving over 35,566 students in 36 schools. Four intermediate (grades 7-8) schools serve more than 5,603 students. The intent of the Write On! program is to provide a focused, standards-based and technology enhanced writing program for all intermediate school students that will lead to significant gains in student writing ability and assessment scores. Writing has been identified as a major learning need across the district, with evidence that students need to increase their frequency of writing and demonstrate growth in writing skills through electronic portfolios and test scores. Students participating in the Write On! program will write frequently to the state academic content writing standards on mobile-lab classroom computers, submitting the papers for scoring using a proven electronic artificial-intelligence software program that provides immediate feedback. Students will edit work multiple times and ultimately have an opportunity to share their work through electronic publishing. During Year One (2004-05), all seventh grade students will participate in the project along with their English teachers. In Year Two, the project will be expanded to include all intermediate school students (grades 7 and 8) and their English teachers. The model includes a strong professional development program in order to ensure continuous support and feedback as well as site-based support for teachers. Write On! enhances the current district technology training program and provides a framework in which to organize the use of technology in pedagogy and management of student learning. Because of the Write On! program, students will dramatically increase the opportunities they presently have to practice writing to various prompts that support the state Language Arts Content Standards, and support the 7th grade writing assessment. My Access! Web-based software (Vantage Learning) will provide students immediate scoring and feedback, and encourage improvement through a continuous, iterative process of writing and revising. (The above information is from Form 3 of SVUSD's Project Write On! grant application.)
