Frequently Asked Questions
SAME TEAM REQUESTS & TEAM FORMATION:

Dear Youth Sports: My son and his friend need to be on the same team for carpool reasons. Is this possible? If so, how do I request it? -Carpooling in Coto

Dear Carpooling: In our beginning sports programs (Soccer, Baseball, Beginning Basketball and "D" division Flag Football) the emphasis is on fundamental skill development and no score is kept. Because of this non-competitive format, random team formation works well and the league is able to accommodate same team requests most of the time. To request this, please call the Saddleback Sports Line at 460-2731.

In our competitive leagues (divisions that have player evaluations followed by a coach's draft) the primary goal is to create a balanced division through the draft process. In this case, same team requests even for carpool reasons, cannot be granted.

Dear Youth Sports: I registered my triplets for T-Ball at Trabuco Hills. Now I need to make sure they're on the same team so I'm not going three places at once. Help! -Triplets in Trabuco Canyon

Dear Triplets: Rest assured. Siblings are always placed on the same team, unless parents request otherwise.

Dear Youth Sports: Our family was out of town and we missed my son's Flag Football Evaluation and my daughter's Beginning Basketball Orientation. Did they get placed on a team? If so, how do I find out their coach's information? -Missed It in Mission Viejo

Dear Missed It: Yes, both of your children are on a team. Players are only dropped from our league once a cancellation form has been processed. Since your son missed an evaluation, he was randomly placed on a team at the end of the coach's draft. Coaches receive their rosters on Monday following the evaluation. Coaches are asked to call their players as soon as possible. Generally speaking, if you don't hear from your coach by Thursday following the evaluation, you should call the Saddleback Sports Line at 460-2731.

Your daughter missed an Orientation, so she was already placed on a team. Your daughter's coach has your contact information. We ask coaches to call their players that missed the orientation. However, if you don't hear from your coach by Thursday following the orientation, please call the Saddleback Sports Line at 460-2731 for your coach's information.

ELIGIBILITY:
Dear Youth Sports: I am really interested in registering my children for basketball, but we don't live within the Saddleback Valley Unified School District boundaries. Can we still play? -Interested in Irvine

Dear Interested: Don't worry! You don't have to be a Saddleback Valley resident. We welcome and encourage every one to play in our leagues!

Dear Youth Sports: My daughter wants to play roller hockey. According to your registration information, she is eligible for the "B" division. She's never played before. Can I register her in a lower division so she can learn the sport first? -Novice in Nellie Gail

Dear Novice: Our divisions are by "year born" only. Since our leagues are recreation-based, we have beginners in every division. The coach's draft ensures that we have experienced and beginning level players on each team.

Dear Youth Sports: My son was in Flag Football last season and he was one of the best players in the "C" division. I'm afraid that if he stays in the same division again he'll get bored. Is there any way he can play in the "B" division even though he's too young? -Advanced in Aliso Viejo

Dear Advanced: We allow children to play up one birth year. So if your son was born in 1995, he could play up with kids born in 1993-94. However,he would not be eligible to play with kids born in 1991-92.

VOLUNTEER COACHES:
Dear Youth Sports: My children are registered for Soccer this season. I'd really like to be their coach, but I haven't played soccer since elementary school! I'm not sure I remember all the rules! Can you provide me with some coaching materials? -Wants to Coach in Wagon Wheel

Dear Wants to Coach: Yes! We provide new coaches with a sport specific book by the American Sport Education Program and a coach's manual that includes fun games and drills. You receive an embroidered coach's shirt, once a year, for volunteering. All coaches also receive a $25 coach's credit that you can use toward a future program. Just go to the Youth Sports page and download the Volunteer Coach's Application.

Dear Youth Sports: I've been coaching my daughter's basketball league for the last 5 seasons. I just realized I haven't called the Saddleback Sports Line yet to volunteer! If I can't coach, my daughter will kill me! Am I too late? -Returning Coach in Rancho Santa Margarita

Dear Returning: You're probably not too late. Returning coaches, in good standing, receive priority selection for future coaching positions. We almost always have all our coaches in place after the evaluation or orientation day, so if you want to coach, it's always best to call early!

Dear Youth Sports: I'd like to help out with my son's Beginning Basketball team, but I'm not interested in coaching. Do you have any suggestions? -Likes to Help in Laguna Hills

Dear Likes to Help: There's a lot you can do! We suggest the following volunteer opportunites for parents like you: assistant coaching, monitoring players during the game, making phone calls to the team, organizing picture day, making a snack list, getting names and numbers on the uniforms, planning a team party or being responsible for the team's Award Certificate Program. Just let your coach know what you'd like to volunteer for!

GENERAL INFORMATION:
Dear Youth Sports: I want to register for Soccer, but according to the registration information, I have to pay a $10 late fee. I just received the Youth Sports Quarterly from my son's school. Can you waive the late fee? -Late in Lake Forest

Dear Late: We assess a $10 late fee for any registration received after the date listed on our information. The late fee period is generally 2 1/2 weeks prior to the start of the program. We do this to encourage people to register EARLY! It takes a lot of time to put our leagues together before an Orientation or Evaluation Day. We also advertise a season in advance. We put out 4 Youth Sports Quarterlies a year: Fall/Winter, Winter/Spring, Spring/Summer and Summer/Fall. You can always check our website for the most recent youth sports information. For these reasons, we cannot waive the late fee.

Dear Youth Sports: You put together a pretty funny and thorough FAQ page. Who are you anyway and how do I get a hold of you if my question wasn't answered here? -Likes to Know in Ladera Ranch

Dear Likes to Know: The Youth Sports Department of Saddleback Recreation is ran by Recreation Coordinator George Blair. We are ably assisted in the office by Bill Barry, David Nett, Nikki Wittman and by the wonderful Youth Sports staff out on site. If you have any further questions or would just like some one to talk to, we answer the Saddleback Sports Line at (949) 460-2731 Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
