7th Grade Genetics and Evolution

These sites are directly linked to CA Sceince Standards 2 and 3: Genetics Standard 2 A typical cell of any organism contains genetic instructions that specify its traits. Those traits may be modified by environmental influences. Evolution Standard 3. Biological evolution accounts for the diversity of species developed through gradual processes over many generations.

Talking Glossary of Genetics
This is not your average glossary on the web. This gives you the chance to hear the definition of the word or phrase that you are looking up. This glossary gives the correct pronunciation and supplemental background for the term, and there are also illustrations or additional links for the term. The talking glossary is also available in Spanish.

University of Wisconsin: Chromosomes

This site from the University of Wisconsin provides a great discussion of DNA and how it replicates. Includes a chromosome map of a human male, a close up of chromosomes just before cell division and a close up of a DNA molecule.

This correlates to CA Standard 2. A typical cell of any organism contains genetic instructions that specify its traits. Those traits may be modified by environmental influences. As a basis for understanding this concept:

Genetic Science Learning Center: What is a Gene?

This site presents an interactive tour of the human gene. Content explores what a gene is and how they work.

Other pages on the site tour DNA, chromosomes etc.
