What keeps us busy?
Dear Parents,
What a wonderful group of "Busy Bee Scholars" I have the privilege of teaching, enjoying, and working with this year already! We have 24 students in our class!
In Language Arts we have just finished our fourth group of reading stories in a theme called Amazing Animals. We are now taking our fourth theme reading test which is really long and we will finish it in a week! In grammar we are learning the meaning of common and proper nouns. We are learning that proper nouns need to be capitalized because they are exact nouns. Verbs are words that show action and adjectives are words that add detail to our sentences. We are also learning to combine or join two short sentences with the word "and" to make it more interesting. Pronouns are words that take the place of someone or something's name. Contractions use an apostrophe because they shorten two words that are put together. The apostrophe takes the place of the letter or letters that are left out! How confusing and mixed up all these new grammar vocabulary words can be for us! In grammar we are also learning more about dictionaries, entry words, guide words, and the syllables of words! We are learning how to make words plural and then how prefixes and suffixes are added to base words! We are learning to use quotation marks in our sentences and stories when the characters are talking! There is much to teach to my "Busy Bee Scholars" but we are following our California State Standards and meeting the challenge of doing our very best work on our big state test in May!
Reading Counts is also a big part of our reading comprehension program in second grade. As we take a short ten question test on each book that we read, we get points and add stickers to our gumball machines to see who is reading so much that their reading lexile number is getting higher! Last year she had boys and girls reach Reading Counts scores of over 500 points! This year we're all going to try hard to beat her last year's second grade scores!
In math we have just finished learning about addition and subtraction regrouping. We are learning about plane and solid shapes. We are learning about probability and fractions in chapter seven also. Every week we're faithful about doing our Daily Oral Language and our Daily Oral Math and out Mountain Language and Mountain Math!
In science we have focused on the study of rocks, minerals, crystals, and gems! We took a Trabuco Field Trip Study to become geologists with first hand experience! What fun we had together as a class! In Social Studies we are learning more about President George Washington and President Abraham Lincoln.
In health we are learning about our bodies and the job of our major organs. We are also focusing on the care of our teeth for this month.
In writing we have just finished up the published copy of our African American reports with illustrations and all! For some of us this is the first biography we have ever read! In the near future with the help of our parents, we will be writing our own autobiographies! We write letters each week to our classmates when they are the VIP of the week. We also write paragraphs with our school writing program called Writing Reflections! We are becoming better writers each week!
Here are some outstanding websites that children should use over the school year. These links provide a fun way for children to find answers to questions and they're great for giving children experience with computers:

This site will be sensitive to upper and lowercase typing! Let me know if you have any trouble! Before it's time for our December Busy Bee Store, I will award children who have logged in and used this website with extra "Big Bucks Play Money!"
