Introduction

Hello. My name is Joel Rawlins. I am very excited to be the new Principal of Portola Hills Elementary School. This school has an outstanding reputation in all respects. One hears only positive things about the students, staff and parents at Portola Hills. From my recent experiences here, I can confirm that it is all true.

I have been an educator for a long time. I started in 1974 as an elementary classroom teacher in ABC Unified School District. In 1980, I moved to SVUSD to be an elementary performing arts teacher. During the next 11 years I taught at many of the elementary schools in the district. In 1991, I transferred back to the 6th grade classroom at de Portola Elementary School, where I stayed until I became an administrator.

During my last two years at de Portola, I became interested in administration and went UCI to get an administrative credential. In 2003, I served as the Assistant Principal at Melinda Heights Elementary School, and in 2005 I became the principal there. Now, I am very happy to be a Portola Hills Explorer.

Communication

This web page will be one of my major forms of communication with parents in the Portola Hills community. I usually update the information here on a weekly basis. I plan to add links to other sources of information for parents. One of them will be a calendar of upcoming events at Portola Hills. Please return to this page often to see any new information.

You may have already received a couple of phone calls from me. From time to time I will be using a phone messenger system to contact all parents, or selected groups of parents. For instance, when 6th grade students go to Outdoor Science School, I use this system to call only the sixth grade parents to let them know that the buses arrived safely. I try not to over use this message system. I will not be calling all of you on a weekly basis. However, since I will be calling, it is important that we have your correct phone number on file in our computer. So, if you have not yet received any calls from me, you might want to see if we have your number.

Email is another form of communication that I use on a daily basis. If you need to contact me, you may email me at: rawlins@svusd.org. Or, you may call me at the school office at: 949-459-9370. Either way, I will try to respond within 24 hours.
