UNITS OF STUDY
WORD STUDY: We will study Latin and Greek roots using lessons from the textbook: Words on the Vine (Instuctional Fair, publisher) Spelling lessons will include a study of spelling rules and words most often mispelled.
GRAMMAR-- We will study the 8 Parts of Speech. In addition, we will have Daily Oral Language lessons on problem areas and sentence combining techniques. We will be studying from the Holt Handbook and students will practice a variety of grammar and writing exercises.
LITERATURE: Using the Holt Literature and Language Arts Series, we will study short stories, poetry, literary terms, and vocabulary. In addition, we will be reading a novel in the spring.
WRITING: We study paragraphing, literary response, multi-paragraph essays (narrative, persuasive, expository).
READING COUNTS! This program is worth 20% of each student's Language Arts grade. . Students keep a record keeper in their binder to document books they have read and quizzes they have passed. A list of books included in the RC program may be found in the RSM website under "Reading Counts!" Students are evaluated at mid-term and at the end of the trimester. Students must have parent approval before reading a book. They have 2 chances to pass a test. One book report may be done per trimester on a non-Reading Counts! book (with teacher and parent approval). RC Deadlines: 1st Tri: progress report--Oct. 21; final-Dec. 1 2nd Tri: progress report--Feb. 3; final-March 16 3rd Tri: progress report--May 6; final-June 17
MATERIALS:
Students should bring the following materials to class every day:
1. 3 ring binder with 5 dividers (may share this binder with another class)
Label each divider: Graded papers Grammar/Word Study Literature Composition Reading Counts
2. Planner 3. 2 pens (black or blue) 4. Marking pen (red, purple, green, etc.) 5. Reading Counts book
