Physiology-Anatomy Honors - Grade 11-12
This course is a comprehensive advanced upper division class. It carries with it a weighted grade the same as an advanced placement course. It is a rigorous, in depth, and challenging examination into the complexities of human structure and function. It offers laboratory investigations commonly seen at the college and post graduate level. Extensive lab work is done in osteology, hematology, cardiology, exercise physiology, respiratory physiology, metabolism, body composition, and urinalyses. Investigations involving a vertebrate dissection, vision, hearing, and the nervous system are also an integral part of the curriculum. Statistical analyses parallel many labs to further verify the significant relationships of chosen physiological variables. Furthermore, discussions of medical treatments, surgeries, and disease are carefully woven into the curriculum to broaden student awareness and understanding. Parallel enrollment in the SVUSD Adult Education program is mandatory for the successful completion of the laboratory portion of the curriculum. This involves the attendance at scheduled evening lab sessions that range in time from 1-2 hours per session. Other times may be arranged for the convenience of the student. Students enrolled in this class are typically well- motivated, have demonstrated an oustanding academic capability, possess advanced study habits, and are seriously considering pursuing an educational path leading to careers in the health and medical fields. This class meets the A-F requirements for the U.C. System for an upper division college prep science.
Biology - Grade 10
Biology is a college-prep one year course that examines many concepts involving the various life forms that inhabit our planet . The scientific method, writing lab reports, investigations in biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, evolution, botany, invertebrate and vertebrate animal structure and function highlight the course. The primary goal is to provide the student with the opportunity to gain a basic breadth of knowledge that will lead to sound, informed decisions concerning biological and human affairs issues. This course DOES meet the requirements of the U.C system for entrance.
