ETHS Math Dept. Staff:
Valerie Bromberg
Charger since 1994
Courses: Algebra 1A, I, and II
Mrs. Bromberg is a native Californian from when there were only a few of them. She has a BA in Math from CSUF when it was called something else and a masters from Chapman University when it was still just a college. All the Brombergs have hung out at ETHS at one time or another as her husband has been a substitute teacher there and her daughter graduated from ETHS in 1998. Besides enjoying correcting tests, she volunteers at an animal shelter and spends as much time as possible taking in the sunshine in Hawaii.


Todd Dixon
Charger since 1995
Courses: Math A and Algebra 1A
Mr. Dixon has been teaching in the math department for 9 years. He is also the boys' varsity basketball coach. Prior to El Toro High School, he taught Algebra at Santa Margarita High School and coached basketball at Vanguard University. He has been married for 10 years and has a son, Jack, who is 3 years old and a daughter, Kaitlin, who is 10 months old. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Southern California College in 1989 where he played basketball for four years. He was an Academic All-American his junior and senior year in college. He resides in Lake Forest and enjoys spending time with his family and coaching basketball.


Name: Mark Flippin
Chrager since 1991
Courses: Honors Geometry, Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra 1B.
Mr. Flippin grew up in the local community of Fountain Valley. He graduated from Long Beach State University where he majored in Mathematics, and minored in Physical
Education. When Mr. Flippin first came to El Toro he taught Math, was an assistant Varsity Football coach, and coached JV Girls Softball. Currently at El Toro Mr. Flippin is the Offensive Coordinator for the Varsity Football team, and is the Head Varsity Boys Golf coach. He lives in Dana Point with his wife and one child. He enjoys surfing and playing golf in his spare time.


Name: Kelly Galasieski (Owens)
Charger since: 1999
Courses: Algebra 1B and Psychology
Formerly known as Miss Owens, Mrs. Galasieski grew up in Lake Forest and graduated from ETHS in 1993. After getting her bachelors degree from UC Berkeley, she returned to beautiful Orange County to get her teaching credential at Chapman University. In addition to her teaching schedule, Mrs. "G" keeps busy by coaching girls' cross country, advising Girls' League, and being a SVEA representative. She is enjoying newly married life with her husband in Mission Viejo.


Jim Martin
Charger since 1989 as a freshmen, 1997 as a coach, 1998 as a teacher
Courses: Geometry and Algebra 2
The “Young Mr. Martin” went to La Madera and Serrano then graduated from El Toro in 1993. During his collegiate years in Seattle he studied English and math at the University of Washington, graduating in 1996. He earned his teaching credential at CSULB and his master’s degree from Grand Canyon University. He has coached freshmen and varsity football and frosh-soph and varsity baseball at El Toro and currently coaches the wide receivers on the varsity football team. He resides in Costa Mesa with his friends, and enjoys sports, traveling to Las Vegas and around the world, and spending time with his family and friends.


Tom Martin
Charger since 1985
Courses: Algebra 1, 1A, 1B
The “Old Mr. Martin” graduated from the University of Redlands in 1974. He served in the California National Guard from 1971-1977. He began teaching career in 1974, then came to SVUSD in 1979. He taught at Los Alisos from 1979-1985 and has been at ETHS since.


Sharon Moriwaki
Charger since 1990
Courses for 2004-2005: Algebra 2, AP Calculus AB
Aloha! Ms. Moriwaki attended public schools in Hawaii where she spent a couple of summers packing pineapples in those small Dole pineapple cans. Thank goodness for a college education! She earned a BA and a MA in mathematics from Pacific University in Oregon and Cal State Fullerton, respectively. Her philosophy regarding learning mathematics is that math is not a spectator sport and that revision, recollection, and review will produce successful students. Ms. Moriwaki enjoys attending theatrical productions, reading mysteries, doing crossword puzzles (during summer vacations), and going to movies. She resides in Laguna Niguel with her semi-retired electrical engineer, more of a golfer, husband.


Cheryl O'Malley
Charger since 1980
Courses: Algebra II Honors and Algebra I
Cheryl O'Malley received a BA in Mathematics from the University of California at Irvine. She later went on to earn a Master's Degree in Mathematics from California State University Fullerton. Mrs. O'Malley lives in San Clemente with her husband and two teenaged sons. She enjoys surfing, water-skiing, and watching her sons play competitive soccer.


Sally Remington
Charger since 2004
Courses: Geometry, Statistics, and Algebra 1A
Mrs. Remington received her BA degree from Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Her major was mathematics, and her minor was chemistry. She received her MEd in Curriculum and Instruction from South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota. Since starting her teaching career in 1986, Mrs. Remington has taught at almost every level of high school math from pre-algebra through AP Calculus. Her first teaching job was in Gillette, Wyoming, at Campbell County High School. In 1994, Mrs. Remington and her family moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado. While living in Colorado Springs, she taught at Rampart High School. The International Baccalaureate Programme, IB, was implemented at Rampart during this time. Mrs. Remington facilitated the integration of the IB math classes into the existing course offerings and held teaching responsibilities in Mathematics HL and Mathematics SL (Math Methods). At El Toro, Mrs. Remington is one of the faculty sponsors for the California Scholarship Federation and is currently teaching Geometry, Statistics, and Algebra 1A.


Craig Sherreitt
Charger since 1973 (when El Toro did not have its campus--the school met at Mission Viejo High School from 12:30 - 5:00 every day)
Courses: Math Analysis, Algebra 2, Geometry
Mr. Sherreitt was born and raised in Pomona, California (except two years in Poway, California). His father was in education and he wanted to do the same. Mr. Sherreitt went to 3 colleges--he could not decide quite what to do. He graduated from Point Loma Nazarene University (which was located in Pasadena at the time) with a Christian Education major. Upon graduation, he got a job at El Toro High School and completed his math courses and education courses during his first year of teaching. Mr. Sherreitt also go a Pupil Personnel Services Credential (counselling credential), but has chosen to remain in the classroom where he has more contact with the students. Mr. Sherreitt has been married for 31 years to Shirley. They have 3 sons, a daughter in-law, and one grandson. Mr. Sherreitt enjoys bicycle riding, kayaking, snorkeling, and being with his family. The compelling purpose in Mr. Sherreitt's life is found in First Corinthians 10:31 which states "Whatever you do, do all for the glory of God."


Don Stoll
Charger since 1979
Courses: Geometry and Honors Geometry
Mr. Stoll grew up in Long Beach, graduated from LB Polytechnic HS, UCLA, and was a Baywatch Lifeguard for 18 years. He earned his teaching credential from LB State University and has been a teacher and water polo coach since 1971. He has taught at Westminster HS, Ocean View HS and El Toro HS and was the Head Water Polo Coach and math teacher at each school. As a Lifeguard, he rescued over 500 victims and was in charge of the Junior Lifeguard program for the City of Long Beach from 1978-1985. He married his high school sweetheart, Chris, a history teacher at Serrano Intermediate School. They reside in Lake Forest and have two boys who graduated from El Toro, Brent 28, and Greg 26. Mr. Stoll enjoys all sports and traveling all over the world with his wife of 34 years.
Mr. Stoll's water polo team's at El Toro have won 5 CIF Championships and 16 South Coast League Championships.


Monalee Vail
Charger since 1990
Courses 04-05: Algebra 1, Algebra 2
Mrs. Vail was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, but grew up in Anaheim California. She graduated from Loara High School, and then attended UC Irvine where she majored in Mathematics. Her first 4 years of teaching were spent at Serrano Middle School, and then she moved on to El Toro High School. In the past, Mrs. Vail has coached volleyball and softball. Now her extra time is spent with her husband and three children, living in Tustin and attending her childrens' activities.


Name: Karen Young
Charger since 1999
Courses for 2004-2005: Algebra 1A, Algebra 1B
Mrs. Young immigrated to United States when she was 15. She got her Bachelor of Science degree in aerospace engineering with a minor in mathematics and computer science at California Polytechnic University, Pomona. While she was pursuing a master in mechanical and aerospace engineering at University of California, Irvine, the desire to be a teacher blossomed in her. After completing the master degree and then getting her credential at UCI, she started at ETHS as a math teacher. Mrs. Young now resides in Irvine with her husband and 2 children and enjoys having college students (majority are from UCI) in their home every week for bible study.
